Sun 'n Fun Receives $7.5 Million Grant for New CFAA Building

Officials from the SUN 'n FUN Fly-In and the Polk County School Board have broken ground on a new $7.5 million facility that will house the Central Florida Aerospace Academy, an aviation-oriented high school/career academy already located on the SUN 'n FUN campus. The new 58,000-square-foot facility, which will house up to 500 high school students at CFAA when it is completed, is scheduled to open in August 2011.

Polk Schools, CFAA Receive $1.4 Million NASA Grant

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has awarded Polk County Public Schools a $1.4 million education grant to enhance Kathleen High School's Central Florida Aerospace Academy (CFAA), an aviation oriented high school/career academy located on the campus of the Sun 'n Fun Fly-In. "This major grant from our nation's space agency not only recognizes the quality and potential of the CFAA program, but also places Polk County Schools among some of the country's top science and technology programs," said Superintendant of Schools Dr. Gail F. McKinzie.

Students at the area's only high school aerospace academy got a unique opportunity. Students were able to get an up-close look and tour of the Goodyear blimp. They also learned from the blimp staff how technology helps it fly.

The students in the inaugural class of the Central Florida Aerospace Academy at Kathleen High School are learning how planes are built, how they work and how to troubleshoot an aircraft's circuit board.
