Chelsea Herman
Early Childhood and Teacher Education Academy


Chelsea, who is currently enrolled in Early Childhood Education 2, is working towards the Early Childhood Professional Certificate and plans to pursue her bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education. Chelsea has already passed 5 of the 6 Florida mandated child care training tests. As part of her classroom experience, she interns twice a week at the Little Highlander Academy located on the campus of Lake Wales High School. Chelsea also earned over 240 hours of community service so far this year by volunteering after school in the preschool.

Law Academy Hosts Mock Trial Summer Camp

The GJHS Academy of Legal Studies held a mock trial camp this summer. The students were 9th or 10th graders this school year and many were interested in learning more about the legal field. Campers were assigned a case and they learned how to prepare and present a court trial.

Polk Schools, CFAA Receive $1.4 Million NASA Grant

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has awarded Polk County Public Schools a $1.4 million education grant to enhance Kathleen High School’s Central Florida Aerospace Academy (CFAA), an aviation oriented high school/career academy located on the campus of the Sun ‘n Fun Fly-In. “This major grant from our nation’s space agency not only recognizes the quality and potential of the CFAA program, but also places Polk County Schools among some of the country’s top science and technology programs,” said Superintendant of Schools Dr. Gail F.McKinzie.

IT Academy Partners with the Microsoft Dreamspark™ Program

With the help of Polk County School Board/Workforce Education, the IT Academy at Lakeland High School began a partnership with Microsoft Corporation and joined the Microsoft Dreamspark program. The program allows IT Academy students to download professional Microsoft developer, designer, and, gaming software at no charge. Dreamspark enables students to use Microsoft tools to unlock their creative potential and set them on the path to academic and career success by advancing their learning in the areas of technical design, technology, math, science, and engineering.

The Polk Academy of Business & Technology faculty is particularly proud of their students' accomplishments. At the end of the first semester (2008-2009), 243 students have earned college credit through Articulation Agreements in place with Polk Community College. This translates to 729 credit hours for a total student savings of $60,750.

Bartow Pre-Medical Academy Leads Way in Healthcare Studies

Seven Bartow Middle students recently won awards at a regional Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) organization. HOSA is a national student organization whose mission is to promote career opportunities in healthcare and to enhance the quality of healthcare. The Bartow Middle students compete in a region composed of schools from Hillsborough, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk and Sumter counties.
