SHARK Pre-Academies Overview

Success through Heightened Academics, Research and Knowledge

The Pre-Academy program at Lake Gibson Middle School is designed to prepare middle school students with real-world exposure to career specific curriculum through electives.

The intent is to provide students with occupational exploratory courses and the potential to earn high school credit while enrolled in middle school.

These programs give students valuable workplace skills and prepare them for high school, college, and the workforce of the future.


Agricultural Science

Do you have a passion for animals or a green thumb? In the ASA, Agricultural Science Academy, you will learn about animal science, plant science, food science, and agricultural mechanics. Students will also be able to join FFA, Future Farmers of America, which allows for premier leadership and personal growth.


The Business and Technology Pre-Academy program provides a wonderful opportunity to increase student achievement and to prepare a solid foundation for them to continue their success when they move to a high school level business and technology academy. It also provides them with the tools needed to ensure their success while continuing their future academic endeavors and career choices. Students learn important keyboarding skill as well as MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Excel, MS Access, and Adobe Photoshop. In addition, students learn Basic Computer Concepts and Internet skills.


Do you want to learn about different cuisines, the hospitality industry, and culinary standards? Your journey begins here. After successfully completing this program, students will be able to:

  • Explore career paths in food production, management and service
  • Demonstrate menu planning based on standard recipes
  • Prepare a variety of food products using appropriate procedures-Use and maintain commercial food production equipment

Culinary students are encouraged to join LGMS’s national award winning FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) chapter. Members develop leadership skills while participating in community service and competitive events.

Media Design

Lake Gibson Middle School’s award winning Video Production Team is responsible for producing a daily news program, “The Shark Zone.” Students are responsible for developing show ideas, writing scripts, creating graphics, operating cameras and editing shows, stories and segments.

Students work on Apple computers and use the programs Final Cut Pro, Motion and Garageband.


Have you ever daydreamed about a lab scene from CSI? Does separating DNA from a cell sound like fun? If so, the Lake Gibson Middle School Pre-Biotechnology Academy of Applied Learning may be for you. This is a hands-on program that teaches students lab techniques and procedures. The course will focus on integration of biotechnological concepts and applied laboratory investigations. Students will be engaged in activities that promote skill development in aseptic techniques.

Pre-Criminal Justice

The Criminal Justice Academy (CJA) will offer students a closer look into the fascinating field of criminal justice. The academy will explore the American Criminal Justice System through the police, courts and corrections. This will be accomplished through classroom instruction, crime scene investigation, mock criminal trials, technology and skills to become an effective writer. Field trips both virtual and in the field will enhance the students learning experience. Students will explore the wide range of career-related opportunities in the criminal justice system. Leadership skills will also be a part of the academy curriculum to instill qualities and characteristics for students to become effective leaders.

Pre-Power Academy

Learn information and skills that will enable you to seek careers in the Energy Industry. You will be involved in hands-on learning and laboratory activities including planning, managing and providing support and technical services related to the generation, transmission and distribution of various types of energy along with the design engineering, construction, maintenance, and repair of these systems. Students will gain a solid understanding of industrial electricity and have key insights into many entry-level positions. If you are interested in a career as an Electrician, Line Worker, System Control Operator, Meter Technician, Power Plant Operator, or Engineer – the Power Academy is for you!

Fine Arts

The Fine Arts Pre-Academy includes many facets of creative expression. Between communications, music, art, theater, and drama, students will be able to hone their talents and embrace the freedom to express themselves.

Fine Arts courses offered include:

  • Performing Arts: Drama, Speech/Debate, Chorus I-III, Orchestra and Band (Symphonic, Concert and Jazz)
  • Foreign Languages: Chinese and Spanish
  • Visual Arts: Art Appreciation and Digital Photography

STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math)

Students in the STEAM Accelerated Studies Program are committed to pursuing excellence in all course work. The program requires hard work, self-discipline, organization, and maturity on the part of each student.

Students strive to maintain the high expectations for individual effort, motivation, organization and behavior that are expected in the STEAM program.

Successful completion of the STEAM Academy can result in High School credits in Algebra I Honors, Geometry Honors, Earth/Space Science Honors, and Spanish I Honors.
